AUG Report: Once Upon a Time...

… in a place warm and sunny in early February, a group of individuals descended upon Orlando, Florida.  Some were sneezy (from the Midwest cold), others were sleepy (from the west, due to time difference), most were happy, and although a few might have been grumpy or bashful, none were dopey.   No, these were not Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, in spite of meeting right on the grounds of the Walt Disney World Resort.  Rather, they were attendees of the Advantage Users Group Conference. By all accounts, the conference was a tremendous success.  After several years of dealing with bad weather in January, this was the first time that the conference was held in February.  The weather cooperated beautifully and surrounding activities were fabulous.  All told, there were 80 …

    Europe Links In

After their successful meeting in Paris last fall, Advantage’s European users decided to create a dedicated European Advantage User Group on the professional online network Linked In. They discovered a growing need to share not only Advantage usage and administration knowledge, but to do so within the dynamics and business practices unique to Europe. At the group’s request, ACS provides the administration for this Linked In group, which extends but does not replace the ACS Message Board.   Linked In is an easy way to strengthen the ties between European users, and also an efficient means to "push" information to the community, through regular "latest news" posts.   ACS actively supports the news effort with regular updates on approved modifications available on the …

Larry went above and beyond so many times on this upgrade. He worked several weekends to get dry runs done so I could avoid down time. John and Molly keep the issues moving and resolved quickly. Overall, it was a great experience." Crain Communications recently went live on 11r1, completing a five month upgrade project.   They are …

ACS' Sultan of Swat Retires--Farewell to Stan Pyett

Stan Pyett earned the nickname "The Sultan of Swat" early in his career at ACS and it’s stuck ever since.  ACS folklore has two explanations for how the term "SWAT," (which is our designation for work done investigating and fixing software bugs) got started.  One is that it came from the 70s police term "SWAT team"-- an elite tactical unit using Special Weapons And Tactics.  The other option is that it stands for "SoftWare Attack Team."  Either way, Stan has made it happen for more than 25 years. There isn’t a client company—current or former—that Stan hasn’t worked with at one time or another.  He has endeared himself to dozens of users over the years by tracking down and fixing some pretty gnarly issues that were causing said clients to tear their hair …

    Dynamic Customer Search

Starting at 2011R1, Advantage has to ability to perform the customer search when you tab out of the field or with each keystroke. The search behavior for the TAB and KEYSTROKE is activated with the CDS option SRCHWHEN. The valid values are: ·    ENTER: the default behavior; works as currently, and requires clicking the Search button. ·    TAB:  performs the search each time the search data is entered and the user tabs out of the field---there is no need to click the Search button as a separate action.  This can be a way to progressively narrow your search as you enter your search criteria. It may enable you to locate the desired customer more quickly than if you had used the conventional searching. ·    KEYSTROKE:  performs the search each time a …

    European Client Meeting Held

Bayard Presse hosted the third European Advantage Client Meeting in Paris on September 22 and 23. Use CDS165 to Easily Standardize Company Names

Do you have customers in your database at the same company but with all sorts of different spellings and abbreviations of their company name.   For example, you may have customers at General Electric and some are represented as General Electric Inc., while others have GE, The General Electric Company, or Gen Electric.  Misspelling a company name or storing it in different formats impacts search results and mailing efficiency and significantly hinders data analysis. How can you know how much you're selling to General Electric when it's represented ten different ways in the database across fifty customers? Advantage has the answer:   the CDS165 - Company Name Standardization process. This process standardizes the company names to the most frequent occurrence in your database. …

    Monthly Invoiced Subscriptions

As of 2011R1, a new method of handling CIR subscriptions---the Monthly Invoiced Subscriptions feature---is available. Monthly Invoiced Subscriptions are charged for the issues served---instead of the customer paying in advance for a specific number of issues.  A process (usually run at the end of the month) creates a charge for the customer for the issues received that month. Order Entry Monthly Invoiced subscriptions are identified by a special Subscription Class, M – Monthly Invoiced Subscriptions.  This is a type of perpetual subscription. The subscription continues this way until changed.  This is similar to a perpetual, but the subscription does not have to have a zero rate. Monthly Invoiced Subscriptions require the use of auto-renewal chains, as set up …
