Meet Our Summer Interns

This summer, we're happy (and lucky!) to have six interns hailing from two different universities: the University of Michigan in our hometown of Ann Arbor, and Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, which is just next door.

All six of our interns are Michigan natives. Four of them are Computer Science majors, while the other two are focused on Business Administration and Journalism, respectively. Though they are just starting their careers, they bring a wide range of experiences and interests to the table. Read on to learn more about each of them (from left to right as pictured).

Thomas Oliver — Computer Science Major at the University of Michigan

What led you to choose your major?
I knew I was going to be in that department ever since I first built a computer.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work/school?
I love visiting national parks and going to the movies.

What’s a fun or odd fact about you that your colleagues may not know?
I am a very serious Mario Kart Double Dash player, but I still have a way to go before I can make a living off it :D

Luke Pendleton — Computer Science Major at the University of Michigan

What led you to choose your major?
I’ve always enjoyed the concept of being able to make whatever you want through programming, like a useful tool or a fun little game! When I came to the University of Michigan, I knew that I liked math and science things, so I went into the College of Engineering. All first-year engineering students need to take an introductory coding class, and through that, I saw that computer science had so many more applications than the tiny projects that I had done previously for fun and found myself really enjoying it!

What do you enjoy doing outside of work/school?
I really like playing piano, Spikeball, and Super Smash Brothers.

What’s a fun or odd fact about you that your colleagues may not know?
I personally don’t think it’s odd, but I love ham and pineapple on my pizza :)

Nicole Stark — Business Administration Major, Computer Science Minor at the University of Michigan

What led you to choose your major?
I started off interested in accounting but have since become interested in the technology and operations aspect of the business degree (as well as computer science in recent years).

What do you enjoy doing outside of work/school?
Reading, playing video games, baking, and going out with friends.

What’s a fun or odd fact about you that your colleagues may not know?
I am a fan of both Game of Thrones and the Marvel universe (so am not at all opposed to jokes about my last name in reference to either!).

Rachel Lipa — Computer Science Major at the University of Michigan

What led you to choose your major?
One of the reasons I chose to study computer science is because it requires a lot of problem-solving and attention to detail.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work/school?
I enjoy baking, running, and spending time with family.

What’s a fun or odd fact about you that your colleagues may not know?
Last semester, I took an accessible software design class and worked on a team of four to develop a voice-operated personal alert system for a person with a disability. It was rewarding to use my technical skills to help someone in need.

Adam Martin — Journalism Major at Eastern Michigan University

What led you to choose your major?
I was interested in writing (and the industry hadn’t quite collapsed yet)!

What do you enjoy doing outside of work/school?
Reading, biking or running or anything outside, volunteering, listening to podcasts, playing bar trivia.

What’s a fun or odd fact about you that your colleagues may not know?
I can rap the full album version of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song nearly flawlessly.

Curt Silverthorn — Computer Science Major at the University of Michigan (Not pictured in group photo)

What led you to choose your major?
I fell in love with programming when I took an introductory programming course at UofM.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work/school?
I enjoy reading and camping.

What’s a fun or odd fact about you that your colleagues may not know?
I am a huge country music fan; my favorite artist is Eric Church.
